Therefore, I picked up a few items with each visit over several days. For some of the visits I used the drive thru while other times I dined in. The Taco A.M. Crunchwrap ® Review

A.M. CrunchwrapThere are three different ways to order the Taco Bell A.M. Crunchwrap ®. The options are bacon, sausage, or steak. Everything you could want in a breakfast item is in there. Starting with fluffy scrambled eggs, real cheddar cheese, creamy jalapeno sauce and a crispy golden hash brown and your choice of bacon, sausage or steak wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. The tortilla is then folded and grilled flat to keep everything together. This makes the A.M. Crunchwrap ® perfect for eating in the car while driving.

The A.M. Crunchwrap ® is by far my favorite Taco Bell breakfast item. It is very filling and easy to eat while on the go. The combination of the crispy hash brown and grilled flour tortilla with the egg, cheese and creamy jalapeno sauce creates a perfect balance. Any of the three (Bacon, Sausage or Steak) work well depending on your taste. The jalapeno sauce adds a little spice but does not overpower the rest of the Crunchwrap ®. However, if you do not like spicy then order it without the jalapeno sauce and I think you will still enjoy it. You will also save 70 calories, all from fat. The A.M. Crunchwrap ® with bacon or sausage only costs $2.49. The A.M. Crunchwrap® with steak is a little more at $2.99.

The Taco Bell Waffle Taco Review

taco bell waffle taco
Taco Bell Waffle Taco with Bacon

There are three different ways to order the Taco Bell Waffle Taco. The options are bacon or sausage or Egg and Cheese only. In all cases, the Waffle Taco comes with fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese and a side of sweet syrup. The price for a Taco Bell Waffle Taco is $1.99.

I really did NOT like any of the Taco Bell Waffle Tacos. The first time I had the Waffle Taco it was overcooked and way too chewy. This caused the egg to squeeze out of the waffle as I took a bite. The other times the waffle was extremely greasy. To the point that the napkin I placed it on was drenched in grease, Yuk. The waffle was a little better but lacking in taste. The watery syrup at least makes the Waffle Taco tolerable. The only way to use the syrup is to pour it onto the taco, as you cannot really dip the Waffle taco into the syrup because when you do, the egg falls out. With all the mess, the Taco is not a good item to eat in the car while driving. The sausage is a little dry with a little bit of spice. The flavorless bacon was more like dried bacon bits than fresh bacon.

The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt Review

taco bell waffle taco

The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt has a sausage patty and real cheddar cheese inside warm flatbread and then grilled to melt it all together. Overall, it was a little dry and not big on taste. However, the flatbread was warm and soft and the sausage has a little bit of spice that does provide some flavor. Therefore, for a buck ($1.00), it is not that bad.

Summary

The Taco Bell Waffle Tacos seem like a good idea but fall short on execution. I cannot recommend it as anything more than a novelty. The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt on the other hand is at least ok and worth a try.

Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Taco: Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese

Doritos Locos TacoWith the success of Taco Bell’s Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco, they have introduced the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco. So, how does the Cool Ranch Locos Taco version compare for taste and nutrition to the Nacho Cheese Locos Taco version and to the Original Crunchy Taco.

Of course, I have had the Original Crunchy Taco from Taco Bell many times over the years and I like them just fine. Therefore, with the introduction of the Nacho Cheese version I was sure this would be a hit for me as the Nacho Cheese Doritos Chips are my favorite flavor of Doritos. Sure enough, that was the case. I did like them even better than the Original Crunchy Taco. Now that the Cool Ranch Locos Taco is available, I figured it would be good but would not be better than the Nacho Cheese Locos Taco.

To find out which taco tasted better I went to the Taco Bell at 9825 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. This is a small Taco Bell but is very clean and well run. My tacos were hot and service was good. I tasted the Original Crunchy Taco, the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco and the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco. I did not taste the Supreme versions of these tacos at this time. Read on the find out how these tacos compare for taste and nutrition. I am also including the Nutrition Facts for the Supreme versions.

Taco Bell’s Original Crunchy Taco

I do like Taco Bell’s Original Crunchy Taco. The corn taco shell is crunchy with a mild corn flavor. Taco Bell’s seasoned beef is not overly greasy and can only be described as “having that unique Taco Bell taste”, and I mean that in a good way. The shredded lettuce is fresh and crisp. Finally is the real cheddar cheese that has a little bite that rounds out the taco nicely. I also like the fact that Taco Bell does not deep fry their tacos like other fast food places do.

Taco Bell Locos Tacos
Taco Bell’s Crunchy Taco Nutrition Facts

At first glance, the Nutrition Facts for Taco Bell’s Original Crunchy Taco do not look too bad. However, looks can be deceiving. The fact that this taco is only 170 calories seems good. However, 90 of those calories come from fat, which is over 50% of the calories in this taco. The total fat at 10 grams and saturated fat at 3.5 grams are also high for the size of this item. Some good news though is that the cholesterol is decent at 25 mg. Other positives on nutrition are that dietary fiber is good at 3 grams and Protein is very good at 8 grams. The following are the known allergens for the Original Crunchy Taco: milk, wheat and soy. Also contains Gluten that may cause sensitivity for some people. Unlike the Doritos Locos Taco, there is no MSG in the Crunchy Tacos.

Taco Bell’s Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco

Doritos Locos Taco

The Taco Bell Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco contains the same ingredients (Seasoned beef, shredded lettuce and real cheddar cheese) as the original Crunchy Taco. The only difference is that Nacho Cheese Doritos Chips are used to make the shell.

The Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco shell tastes very much like regular Doritos chips. The texture is a little different lacking the air bubbles found in the chips and not as crisp. However, it is still very good. The Nacho Cheese shell does take center stage with this taco overpowering the rest of the ingredients making this the main flavor. When I first tried this taco back when it first came out, I found the powerful nacho cheese flavor to be a definite plus. However, after tasting the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco I am rethinking this thought. Read the next section to find out what it is.

Doritos Locos Taco

The Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco also contains the same ingredients (Seasoned beef, shredded lettuce and real cheddar cheese) as the original Crunchy Taco. Again, the only change is that the shell is made from Cool Ranch Doritos Chips.

Again, Taco Bell was able to duplicate the taste of the Cool Ranch Doritos Chips in this taco. The difference here is that the Cool Ranch flavor complements the rest of the ingredients instead of overpowering them. I was still able to enjoy “that unique Taco Bell taste” of the meat that makes this a Taco Bell taco. I am surprised to say that I do like the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco better than the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco. It is a better combination of flavors that go together well without overpowering the taco.

Review of Taco Bell’s Cantina Bell Menu

taco bell's cantina bell menuWhen Taco Bell first came out with the Cantina Bell Menu by Master Chef Lorena Garcia in 2012 I thought I would try it. However, when I pulled up to the drive thru and looked at the menu I decided I did not want to try to figure out all the steps to create my order. When I go for fast food, I just want to find what I want and order it. I do not want to go through a three-step process. Well, now that Taco Bell has updated the steak recipe for the Cantina Menu I decided I had no choice but to figure out the steps to ordering and find out how to get a Cantina Steak Burrito.

For this review, I went to the Taco Bell at 9825 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. The lobby for this Taco Bell is very small but well maintained. As I entered, the young woman who was cleaning the tables in the dinning area greeted me. When I was ready to order, she came to the register and took my order. She was very pleasant and helpful with my order. I found this taco Bell to be very clean and the whole staff was friendly. I had some small issues with my order and they handled them with a smile, and an attitude of we want to make the customer happy. To me this is what good customer service is all about. It is not the fact that they get my order right to begin with. It is the fact that they take care of the problem and make it right, that is what impressed me about this visit.

How to Order from the Cantina Bell Menu

I am not sure if you will agree or not but at first I found the Cantina Menu to be confusing and off-putting. Because it showed ordering as steps, I thought there was more to it. I mean you break things down into steps to make something complicated easer to understand, right.
taco bell cantina bell menu
Well, this time I decided to actually read the Cantina Menu and finally figure it out. After reading the menu, I thought this is not that complicated. It is just spelling out the steps you would normally take when ordering any other item on the menu. First, you decide what you want from the menu, a bowl or the burrito. Next you decide what type of burrito or bowl that you want, Chicken, Veggie or Steak and finally you are decide if you want to make this a combo or not. Not that complicated.

If you decided to make it a combo, you will get chips and a drink with your order. But wait, you’re not done yet. Now that you made this a combo, there is an additional decision you will have to make. You must now decide what you are going to dip your chips in, are you going to choose Guacamole, Corn Salsa or Pico De Gallo? I know it seems like I am making a big deal about this extra step but when I placed my order I did not realize that I had this decision to make and the young lady at the register did not ask me about it either. When I got my order, I started comparing what I got with what was on the menu. I only got the Guacamole and I thought that I was to get all three items (Guacamole, Corn Salsa and Pico De Gallo). I did not realize it was a choice. I asked the young woman about it and she said “oh, I am sorry let me get you the rest of your order”. She did not realize it was an option either. Well, we got it sorted out and for this order, I was able to keep the Guacamole and she gave me the Pico De Gallo as well.

For me a more traditional menu layout that just listed each item separately would have been clearer. In fact, they could even have listed the Chips and salsa as a separate menu item. This would have allowed them to sell it separately as well as describe the choices of salsas with the chips.

The Taco Bell Cantina Steak Burrito

taco bell cantina bell menuFrom Taco Bell’s website the Cantina Steak Burrito is made with tender-braised thick cut steak marinated in Chef Lorena Garcia’s authentic Latin recipe, premium Latin rice, flavorful black beans, crisp romaine lettuce, guacamole made from real Hass avocados, pico de gallo prepared fresh daily, roasted corn and pepper salsa and a creamy cilantro dressing, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

taco bell cantina bell menuI found the steak in the Cantina Steak Burrito to be very tender and tasted like real steak. In the past, some of Taco Bells steak burritos had a mushy texture that made it taste like fake meat. The combination of the different ingredients was perfect. You can taste the real Hass avocados; the pico de gallo gave it a little spice without making it to spicy. The black beans and Latin rice added to the flavor. The lettuce and roasted corn and pepper salsa gives it a little crunch and the creamy cilantro dressing gives it a little more flavor along with keeping it juicy.

So is the Cantina Steak Burrito a healthy choice. Compared to other fast foods it would not be your worst choice. Yes, it is high is calories at 780 and high in fat at 28 grams and saturated fat at 7 grams. In addition, as is the case with most fast foods sodium is very high at 1,900 mg. However, when you figure that you are getting over a pound of food, these numbers do not seem as bad. On the plus side, there is no trans fat and cholesterol is good at only 50 mg. Total carbohydrates are only 98 grams. You get plenty of fiber at 13 grams and plenty of protein at 33 grams. Following are the known allergens for the Cantina Steak Burrito: Gluten, Milk, Soybean Oil, Egg, and Wheat.

Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Salsa

taco bell cantina bell menu
Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Guacamole

When you order a Cantina Burrito or Bowl as a meal, it comes with a medium drink, chips and your choice of Corn Salsa, Guacamole or Pico De Gallo.

First, let me start my saying that the chips are very good. The chips were light and crisp, on par with the chips you would get from nice sit down Mexican food restaurant. I tried the guacamole and it was very good. I could tell the guacamole was made fresh from real avocados as I could see and taste the chucks of real avocados. I also tried the Pico De Gallo salsa. It was also very good. It was chunky with a little bit of spice to give it some bite without being to spicy. I did not try the Corn Salsa separately but it was very good mixed into the burrito that I had.

Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Pico De Gallo

The nutrition facts given are for the chips with the salsa or guacamole together. Of course, the guacamole is the highest in calories, total fat and saturated fat. So if you are trying to save a little you can go with one of the other salsas. The good thing about these sides is that they are not just empty calories like other sides that you might have. You do get some fiber and protein that helps to make these a healthier choice for a side.
