Paris Hilton is back for the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger

Carl’s Jr. brings back Paris Hilton along with Hannah Ferguson to promote their Texas BBQ Thickburger. A great commercial can entice one to give a burger a try. However, I have done the taste test for you and can tell you if the Texas BBQ Thickburger is deserving of all the hype. I also reviewed the customer service provided to me at the Carl’s Jr. location where I got my burger. This review also includes detailed Nutrition Facts for all three versions of the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger (the Single, 1/3 pound and the 1/2 pound)

Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger Commercial

Hannah Ferguson - Texas BBQ Thickburger
Hannah Ferguson – Texas BBQ Thickburger

Hannah Ferguson, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model and Texas native is the newest spokes model for the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger. Hannah Ferguson will be joined by Paris Hilton who will have a cameo appearance. The new commercial is reminiscent of Paris Hilton’s 2005 “I Love Paris” commercial where she washed her black Bentley while sensually enjoying a burger. This time in the “I Love Texas” commercial it’s a bikini-clad Hannah Fergusons turn to wash her car while enjoying a Texas BBQ Thickburger. Paris Hilton pulls up to help, also wearing a bikini and says “You missed a spot”.

Customer Service Review

To try the Texas BBQ Thickburger sandwich I went to the drive-thru at the Carl’s Jr. at 9840 Carmel Mountain Road in San Diego, CA. The server was friendly and service was quick. I got my order and proceeded to the parking lot to take pictures and to try it while it was still hot.

However, when I took it apart to take pictures of the inside I noticed that there was very little BBQ sauce. I walked back in to have them add more BBQ sauce. I showed it to the cashier (the same guy that took my order in drive thru), he agreed that there was very little sauce and asked the cook to add more sauce. She complained that she had already put the correct amount on the sandwich before even looking at it. She went ahead and added more sauce and wrapped it back up. Because I was able to see the grill area from the counter I was able to see that she did not add anything extra to the sandwich. So, I was comfortable that it was safe to eat.

Texas BBQ Thickburger – With Extra Sauce

The other issue with this visit was that the fries were served cold and stale. I should have taken them back as well, but I was too focused on the lack of BBQ sauce to think of it at the time.

The Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger

The Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger comes in three sizes, the Single, 1/3 pound or the 1/2 pound. The Single is made from a 100% pure beef patty, while the 1/3 and 1/2 pound patties are made from Black Angus beef. The other difference is that the single uses their regular seeded bun while the 1/3 and 1/2 pound versions use their new fresh-baked bun. The rest of the ingredients remain the same for the three sandwiches with American cheese, Smoked Brisket, Mesquite BBQ Sauce and Crispy Fried Jalapeño & Onion Strips.

The Texas BBQ Thickburger Review

Let’s start with the misleading promotional photo for the Texas BBQ Thickburger. The photo shows the burger overflowing with brisket, Jalapeño & Onion Strips and BBQ Sauce. Well, in reality there was very little of any of these items actually on the burger. I did go back and ask for more BBQ sauce because it looked too dry otherwise. Here is a side by side photo so you can see what I mean.

The Texas BBQ Thickburger was not as spicy as I thought it was going to be. I liked the mild kick of the Jalapeño & Onion Strips. The American cheese was barely noticeable. The Smoked Brisket with the Mesquite BBQ sauce was very good. I just wish there was more of it. Overall, I found the Texas BBQ Thickburger to be a great tasting burger.

Twist up the Ultimate Cheeseburger with BBQ or Jalapeño Ranch

Twist up your favoritesJack in the Box has a new campaign of “Twist up your favorites” and what better way to twist up a favorite than to bring us two variations of their Ultimate Cheeseburgers with the BBQ Ultimate Cheeseburger and the Jalapeño Ranch Ultimate Cheeseburger. I will review and provide nutrition facts for these two new Ultimate Cheeseburgers along with the original Ultimate Cheeseburger and the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger.

I picked up my Ultimate Cheeseburgers from the Jack in the Box at 9337 Mission Gorge Road, Santee CA, 92071 over several visits. I like this Jack in the Box because I typically get good service and the food is served fresh and hot. My only issue at this location is that they do not always serve the complete menu. For example this location does not currently serve the Breakfast Monster Taco. I asked one time about another item they did not carry and was told that this was a training location. Not sure why that impacts the menu. Anyway, still a well-run store.

The BBQ Ultimate Cheeseburger

Jack in the Box BBQ Ultimate Cheeseburger

The BBQ Ultimate Cheeseburger is made with two beef patties, American cheese, Swiss-style cheese on a toasted sesame seed bun with BBQ sauce and grilled onions. Now I like BBQ sauce and grilled onions so I was expecting to really like this burger. However, I found it to be just ordinary. The BBQ sauce has a sweet flavor that was unimpressive. The grilled onions provided little additional flavor. It was not a bad burger, just not anything to get excited about.

The Jalapeño Ranch Ultimate Cheeseburger

Jack in the Box Jalapeño Ranch Ultimate Cheeseburger

The Jalapeño Ranch Ultimate Cheeseburger is made with two beef patties, American cheese, Swiss-style cheese on a toasted sesame seed bun with creamy ranch sauce and sliced jalapeños. The Jalapeños do provide a lot of spice while the ranch sauce helps to cool the burger down a little. This is not to say that this is not a spicy burger, because yes it is very spicy. I did like the Jalapeño Ranch Ultimate Cheeseburger.

Taco Bell Waffle Tacos and Sausage Flatbread Melt Reviews

taco bell waffle tacoTaco Bell has launched a full menu of breakfast items including Waffle Tacos, A.M. Crunchwraps, A.M. Grilled Tacos, Breakfast Burritos, Sausage Flatbread Melt and Cinnabon Delights. For my taste tests I found that, I really liked some items, while other items I really disliked. Detailed Nutrition Facts for each item are included in each of my reviews. In this review, I focused on the Waffle Tacos and the Sausage Flatbread Melt.

Please read my reviews for the rest of the Taco Bell breakfast items

A.M. Crunchwrap® (Bacon, Sausage or Steak)

A.M. Grilled Taco (Bacon, Sausage or Egg and Cheese)

Breakfast Burritos (Bacon, Sausage or Steak and Egg) can also be made Fresco Style

Sides and Drinks (Cinnabon® Delights™ – 2, 4 or 12 Pack, Hash Brown, Premium Hot Coffee or Tropicana® Orange Juice)

I picked up all the breakfast items from the Taco Bell at 8033 North Durango, Las Vegas, NV 89131. There was no way I would be able to provide a detailed review of all these items in just one visit. Therefore, I picked up a few items with each visit over several days. For some of the visits I used the drive thru while other times I dined in. In either case, I was the only person in the store or in drive thru. For each visit, the person taking my order was friendly and the food was hot and fresh.

The Taco Bell Waffle Taco Review

taco bell waffle taco
Taco Bell Waffle Taco with Bacon

There are three different ways to order the Taco Bell Waffle Taco. The options are bacon or sausage or Egg and Cheese only. In all cases, the Waffle Taco comes with fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese and a side of sweet syrup. The price for a Taco Bell Waffle Taco is $1.99.

I really did NOT like any of the Taco Bell Waffle Tacos. The first time I had the Waffle Taco it was overcooked and way too chewy. This caused the egg to squeeze out of the waffle as I took a bite. The other times the waffle was extremely greasy. To the point that the napkin I placed it on was drenched in grease, Yuk. The waffle was a little better but lacking in taste. The watery syrup at least makes the Waffle Taco tolerable. The only way to use the syrup is to pour it onto the taco, as you cannot really dip the Waffle taco into the syrup because when you do, the egg falls out. With all the mess, the Taco is not a good item to eat in the car while driving. The sausage is a little dry with a little bit of spice. The flavorless bacon was more like dried bacon bits than fresh bacon.

The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt Review

taco bell waffle taco

The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt has a sausage patty and real cheddar cheese inside warm flatbread and then grilled to melt it all together. Overall, it was a little dry and not big on taste. However, the flatbread was warm and soft and the sausage has a little bit of spice that does provide some flavor. Therefore, for a buck ($1.00), it is not that bad.

Summary

The Taco Bell Waffle Tacos seem like a good idea but fall short on execution. I cannot recommend it as anything more than a novelty. The Taco Bell Sausage Flatbread Melt on the other hand is at least ok and worth a try.

Sonic Pretzel Dog Review

Pretzel DogSonic adds the Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog to the already popular Original Pretzel Dog and the Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog. This review will let you know how each of these Pretzel Dogs taste and what the Nutrition Facts are for the three hotdogs.

To review these Pretzel Dogs I used the drive thru at the Sonic at 10515 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. The drive thru at this Sonic always takes a long time so I expected to wait awhile. At least they did come out, take my money, and bring me my drinks while I waited. When I received my order, the food was hot and fresh.

Sonic’s Original Pretzel Dog

The Original Pretzel Dog is the most basic of the three. The Original Pretzel Dog starts with a 100% pure beef hotdog on a soft pretzel bun topped with yellow mustard. The hotdog itself is very plain with very little flavor. Adding the yellow mustard with the Pretzel bun does give it some flavor. The pretzel bun is too big for the hotdog by itself and the pretzel bun was a little rubbery. Overall, I was not impressed with this version of the Pretzel dog.

Pretzel Dog
Nutrition Facts for the Sonic Original Pretzel Dog

The Sonic Original Pretzel Dog is 4.13 ounces and 320 calories with 160 of those calories coming from fat. Total Fat of 18 grams and Saturated Fat at 7 grams is ok. There are no Trans Fats. Cholesterol of 35 mg is very good. Sodium of 910 mg is a little high. Total Carbohydrates of 27 grams are also very good. You only get 1 gram of Dietary Fiber. Sugars are at 2 grams.  Protein is good at 11 grams. The known allergens for the Sonic Original Pretzel Dog are Soy, Milk, Wheat and Gluten.

Sonic’s Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog

Pretzel Dog

This version of the Pretzel Dog takes it up a notch by topping the 100% pure beef hotdog with melted cheese, crisp bacon and grilled onions all served on a soft pretzel bun. I was anticipating a good hotdog here. However, I was disappointed with what I got. I did try the Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog on more than one occasion to make sure it was not a fluke. However, each time I tried the Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog there was very little cheese, onions or bacon on the hotdog. With the rubbery pretzel bun, the hotdog was dry and lacking in taste.

Pretzel Dog
Nutrition Facts for the Sonic Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog

The Sonic Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog is 5.68 ounces and 430 calories with 240 of those calories coming from fat. Total Fat of 27 grams and Saturated Fat at 11 grams are high. There are no Trans Fats. Cholesterol of 50 mg is good. Sodium of 1270 mg is a very high. Total Carbohydrates of 32 grams are very good. You get 2 gram of Dietary Fiber. Sugars are at 2 grams.  Protein is good at 16 grams. The known allergens for the Sonic Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog are Soy, Milk, Wheat and Gluten.

Sonic’s Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog

Pretzel Dog

Pretzel DogExpecting another disappointment, I was not in a hurry to come back and try this third version of Sonics Pretzel Dog. Nevertheless, the humorous ads did convince me to make my way back to Sonic to try it anyway. Well, this time I was pleasantly surprised. There was plenty of Chili and melted cheddar cheese on top of the 100% pure beef hotdog. This made the hotdog less dry with better flavor. The chili soaked into the bun and somehow made it less rubbery. The pretzel bun has a firm crust that helps to keep the chili from making a mess. Overall, the Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog was good and worth the try.

Pretzel Dog
Nutrition Facts for the Sonic Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog

The Sonic Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog is 6.4 ounces and 480 calories with 230 of those calories coming from fat. Total Fat of 26 grams and Saturated Fat at 11 grams are high. There are no Trans Fats. Cholesterol of 55 mg is good. Sodium of 1370 mg is a very high. Total Carbohydrates of 44 grams are very good. You get 3 gram of Dietary Fiber. Sugars are at 5 grams. Protein is good at 17 grams. The known allergens for the Sonic Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog are Soy, Milk, Wheat and Gluten.

Summary

The idea of a pretzel bun for a hotdog seems like a good one. However, in order to get it right you need the right combination of ingredients. In addition, the pretzel bun needs to be prepared just right or it becomes rubbery. Sonics first two attempts fall a little short with ingredients that do not complement the Pretzel bun as well as one might think. For Sonic though, the third times the charm with their introduction of the Chili Cheese Pretzel Dog. The Chili and the cheese work very well with the Pretzel bun.

Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey Sandwich

Jack in the Box introduces their version of McDonald’s Egg White Delight with the Egg White & Turkey Breakfast Sandwich.

Egg White & TurkeyTo try the Egg White & Turkey Breakfast Sandwich I went to the Jack in the Box at 10537 Scripps Poway Parkway, San Diego CA 92131. I went inside so I could ask a few questions with my order. Service was very slow with very few customers in the lobby. My question for the cashier was if it was possible to get egg whites on any other breakfast sandwich. (McDonald’s allows you to substitute egg whites for any of their breakfast sandwiches.) I was told that this was the only sandwich that came with egg whites. However, according to the official press release dated December 30th 2013 from Jack in the Box “beginning today, all of Jack in the Box’s breakfast sandwiches can be made customized to include egg whites at no additional cost. That’s no yolk!” I guess he did not get the memo.

Tasting the Egg White & Turkey Sandwich

Egg White & Turkey

The Egg White & Turkey Sandwich comes with a slice of tomato, grilled turkey, a slice of American cheese and egg whites on the Jack in the Box regular bun. My first thoughts were that the tomato was going to be too much for this small sandwich. Well, I was right. The egg whites and grilled turkey have no taste to speak of. The regular bun from Jack in the Box is also tasteless. The cheese was so melted that it could no longer be noticed. The only thing I could taste was the tomato. Yuck! Who wants to eat a plain warm tomato sandwich? Not me!  On the plus side, just as McDonald’s does, the egg whites used at Jack in the Box are just that, real egg whites and nothing more.

Egg White & Turkey

Nutrition Facts for the Egg White & Turkey Sandwich

As with the McDonald’s Egg White Delight the Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey saves on overall Calories, Fat and Cholesterol. From a health perspective the Egg White & Turkey would be a good choice.

Egg White & Turkey
Nutrition Facts for Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey

The nutrition facts for the Egg White Delight are as follows. It has only 248 Calories, 52 Calories from Fat, Total Fat of 6 grams, Saturated Fat of 3 grams, no Trans Fat, Cholesterol of 22 mg, 833 mg of Sodium, Total Carbohydrates are 31 grams, 1 grams of Dietary Fiber, 4 grams of Sugars and 18 grams of Protein. The following are the known allergens for the Egg White & Turkey sandwich: egg, soy, wheat and milk.

Compared to the McDonald’s Egg White Delight

Egg White & TurkeyThe egg whites had a good volume that made them light and fluffy. I like the White Cheddar Cheese better than the American cheese. The mild flavor complemented the egg whites without overpowering it as I think the American cheese would have. The saltines of the Canadian bacon works very well with the egg whites. I thought a whole grain English muffin would be dry and grainy. However, McDonald’s is somehow able to provide a healthier better tasting English muffin while maintaining the consistency of the original. Overall, I like the mild flavor of the Egg White Delight.

For taste there is no debate in my mind that the McDonald’s Egg White Delight is by far the better tasting Egg White Breakfast sandwich. The Egg White & Turkey is just too plain with no flavor. Comparing the two sandwiches for nutrition it is very close. The numbers are so close on almost everything that you could almost call it a draw. The one standout nutrition fact though is for Fiber. The Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey sandwich only has 1 gram of Fiber while the McDonald’s Egg White Delight has 5 grams of Fiber. This is a significant difference when it comes to eating healthy.

Egg White & TurkeyThe one place were the Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey has the McDonald’s Egg White Delight beat on is on the price. The Egg White & Turkey is only $1.99 while the Egg White Delight is $3.99.

Nutrition Facts for the McDonald’s Egg White Delight

Does saving only 50 calories translate into a healthier meal? In this case, yes. Those 50 calories all come from fat so you are also reducing the calories from fat by 50. This in turn gives you 5 less grams of total fat and 2 less grams of Saturated fat. The most significant nutrition fact that you save on though is from Cholesterol. You go from 260 mg, which was 87% of your daily allowance, down to only 25 mg. Now you are only using 8% of you daily allowance for Cholesterol. Another positive is that you get one more gram of fiber. Everything else remains the same.

Egg White & Turkey
Nutrition Facts for McDonald’s Egg White Delight

The nutrition facts for the Egg White Delight are as follows. It has only 250 Calories, 110 Calories from Fat, Total Fat of 7 grams, Saturated Fat of 3 grams, no Trans Fat, Cholesterol of 25 mg, 780 mg of Sodium, Total Carbohydrates are 32 grams, 5 grams of Dietary Fiber, 3 grams of Sugars and 18 grams of Protein. The following are the known allergens for the Egg White Delight sandwich: egg, soy lecithin, wheat and milk.

Summary

Eating healthy should not mean sacrificing taste. Unfortunately, the Egg White & Turkey does just that. If you want to eat healthier off the Jack in the Box breakfast menu then order any of the other breakfast sandwiches that you actually like and substitute the egg for the egg whites. For an even better option go for the McDonald’s Egg White Delight that is by far the better Egg White Breakfast sandwich. It tastes better than the Egg White & Turkey and it is a little healthier with the 4 extra grams of fiber.
