Paris Hilton is back for the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger

Carl’s Jr. brings back Paris Hilton along with Hannah Ferguson to promote their Texas BBQ Thickburger. A great commercial can entice one to give a burger a try. However, I have done the taste test for you and can tell you if the Texas BBQ Thickburger is deserving of all the hype. I also reviewed the customer service provided to me at the Carl’s Jr. location where I got my burger. This review also includes detailed Nutrition Facts for all three versions of the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger (the Single, 1/3 pound and the 1/2 pound)

Hannah Ferguson – Texas BBQ Thickburger

Hannah Ferguson, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model and Texas native is the newest spokes model for the Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger. Hannah Ferguson will be joined by Paris Hilton who will have a cameo appearance. The new commercial is reminiscent of Paris Hilton’s 2005 “I Love Paris” commercial where she washed her black Bentley while sensually enjoying a burger. This time in the “I Love Texas” commercial it’s a bikini-clad Hannah Fergusons turn to wash her car while enjoying a Texas BBQ Thickburger. Paris Hilton pulls up to help, also wearing a bikini and says “You missed a spot”.

Customer Service Review

To try the Texas BBQ Thickburger sandwich I went to the drive-thru at the Carl’s Jr. at 9840 Carmel Mountain Road in San Diego, CA. The server was friendly and service was quick. I got my order and proceeded to the parking lot to take pictures and to try it while it was still hot.

However, when I took it apart to take pictures of the inside I noticed that there was very little BBQ sauce. I walked back in to have them add more BBQ sauce. I showed it to the cashier (the same guy that took my order in drive thru), he agreed that there was very little sauce and asked the cook to add more sauce. She complained that she had already put the correct amount on the sandwich before even looking at it. She went ahead and added more sauce and wrapped it back up. Because I was able to see the grill area from the counter I was able to see that she did not add anything extra to the sandwich. So, I was comfortable that it was safe to eat.

The other issue with this visit was that the fries were served cold and stale. I should have taken them back as well, but I was too focused on the lack of BBQ sauce to think of it at the time.

The Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger

The Carl’s Jr. Texas BBQ Thickburger comes in three sizes, the Single, 1/3 pound or the 1/2 pound. The Single is made from a 100% pure beef patty, while the 1/3 and 1/2 pound patties are made from Black Angus beef. The other difference is that the single uses their regular seeded bun while the 1/3 and 1/2 pound versions use their new fresh-baked bun. The rest of the ingredients remain the same for the three sandwiches with American cheese, Smoked Brisket, Mesquite BBQ Sauce and Crispy Fried Jalapeño & Onion Strips.

The Texas BBQ Thickburger Review

Let’s start with the misleading promotional photo for the Texas BBQ Thickburger. The photo shows the burger overflowing with brisket, Jalapeño & Onion Strips and BBQ Sauce. Well, in reality there was very little of any of these items actually on the burger. I did go back and ask for more BBQ sauce because it looked too dry otherwise. Here is a side by side photo so you can see what I mean.

The Texas BBQ Thickburger was not as spicy as I thought it was going to be. I liked the mild kick of the Jalapeño & Onion Strips. The American cheese was barely noticeable. The Smoked Brisket with the Mesquite BBQ sauce was very good. I just wish there was more of it. Overall, I found the Texas BBQ Thickburger to be a great tasting burger.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider Review

For a limited time your can get your bacon fix at Jack in the Box with the Bacon Insider. The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider is a BLT burger infused with bacon at every level. The bacon is above the burger, below the burger and even mixed into the burger patty, you can even find bacon in the mayo. What more can you ask for.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider

I picked up a Bacon Insider sandwich at the Jack in the Box at 9337 Mission Gorge Road, Santee CA, 92071. This is a well-run Jack in the Box and service is usually very good. This time was no exception. Service was friendly, quick and the sandwich was served hot and fresh.

The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider Sandwich

The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider is more than just a bacon cheeseburger. Yes, as you would expect you get plenty of hickory smoked bacon strips. In fact, the hamburger patty is sandwiched between the bacon strips. Then, Jack in the Box takes it up a notch by adding pieces of bacon mixed right into the hamburger patty. Jack in the Box does not stop there with the bacon. They also mix bits of bacon into the creamy mayo. Then on top of all that, you get plenty of crisp lettuce, two slices of tomato and a slice of American cheese. All this served on a brioche bun.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider

The first question I had was “what is a brioche bun?” What I found out was that Brioche is a French bread with a high egg and butter content with a bit of sugar. This makes the bread light a puffy with a golden flaky crust and a little sweet. Absolutely, this is what I got. Jack in the Box’s version of a Brioche bun was light and puffy on the inside with a golden flaky crust on the outside, and a little sweet. Using this soft, sweet bun with all the salty bacon balances out the flavors perfectly.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider First off, this is a good-looking sandwich. It looks like a burger from a fine restaurant. The Bacon Insider looks juicy and very tempting to eat. My first reaction when I took a bite was wow this tastes like a fantastic BLT. I loved that there was lots of crisp lettuce, two slices of tomato and lots of hickory-smoked bacon. The mayo has a hint of bacon mixed in so every bite includes the taste of bacon. The burger patty with the bacon bits mixed in is also great. The only thing that I really could not taste was the American cheese. Therefore, I am not sure if it would make much difference in the taste if you ordered it without the cheese.

However, for taste this is one exceptional burger. The brioche bun is great providing a little sweet to all the saltines of the bacon. Except for the American cheese that I could not taste at all the rest of the ingredients are very flavorful and add to the overall taste of this great tasting sandwich. The Bacon Insider is a little pricy at $4.99 but well worth it. The combo is only $6.59 and includes small fries and a small drink.

McDonald’s New Quarter Pounders Replace Angus Burgers

McDonald's LogoMcDonald’s replaces their Angus Burgers with three new Quarter Pounders. The pricier McDonald’s Angus Burgers are no longer available. However, two of the Angus Burgers are back as Quarter Pounders. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder and the Deluxe Quarter Pounder are direct replacements to the retired Angus Burgers. The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder is a completely new third option.

McDonald’s has made the decision to retire the meatier Angus Burgers partly due to rising beef prices and customers desire for healthier menu options. The Angus Burgers were the least healthy burgers on the McDonald’s menu topping out at 790 calories and 41 grams of fat for the Angus CBO.

In this article, I will review the three new Quarter Pounders for taste along with the Nutritional facts for each. I will also provide reviews and Nutrition Facts for the regular Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

To try the new Quarter Pounders I went to the McDonald’s at 8480 Farm Road in Las Vegas Nevada 89131. I ordered my new Quarter Pounders over several days using the drive-thru each time. The drive-thru lines at this location where always long and it took a while to get to the window. Once I got to the window the service did get better. The new Quarter Pounders were served hot and fresh each time and the people were friendly.

Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder

McDonald's Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder

The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder replaces the Bacon & Cheese Angus Burger. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter pounder is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% Beef with a slice of American Cheese, thick-cut Applewood Smoked Bacon, crinkle-cut Pickles, Red Onions, Ketchup and Mustard on a toasted Bakery Style Bun.

McDonald's Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder - Open

The Angus Bacon & Cheese was my favorite McDonald’s regular menu Angus Burger. Although, the Angus CBO that was only available for a limited time was my all time favorite Angus Burger. That being said I could honestly say that the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder is an acceptable replacement for the Angus Bacon & Cheese. The new Bakery Style Bun is not as dry as the regular Quarter Pounder bun. The new Applewood Smoked Bacon has a lot of flavor. I like McDonald’s regular pickles a lot but, the crinkle-cut pickles on this burger are perfect. Overall, the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder is a great tasting burger.

McDonald's Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts
McDonald’s Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts

You are not going to be eating a McDonald’s Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder to be healthy. At 600 calories, you are getting almost a third (30%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. That part is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 30% daily allowance. With 29 grams of Total Fat or 45% of the total daily allowance, the sandwich has one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 13 grams or 65% of daily allowance is more than double what you would want. Cholesterol is only a little high at 105 mg or 35% of daily allowance. Sodium is also double the daily allowance at 1440 mg or 60% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 12 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 48 grams or 16%. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 37 grams or 74% of the daily allowance. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder are Wheat, Soy Lecithin and Milk.

Deluxe Quarter Pounder

McDonalds' Deluxe Quarter Pounder

The Deluxe Quarter Pounder replaces the Deluxe Angus Burger. The Deluxe Quarter pounder is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% beef with a slice of American cheese, a ripe tomato, leaf lettuce, crinkle-cut pickles, red onions, mayonnaise and mustard on a toasted bakery style bun. Calling this a Deluxe Quarter Pounder is appropriate as all the ingredients combine to make this Quarter Pounder a great tasting deluxe burger.

McDonald's Deluxe Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts
McDonald’s Deluxe Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts

Nutrition wise you are doing a little better with the McDonald’s Deluxe Quarter Pounder over the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder. However, I still would not call this sandwich healthy. At 540 calories, you are getting almost a third (27%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. This is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 27% daily allowance. With 27 grams of Total Fat or 42% of the total daily allowance, this sandwich is also over one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 11 grams or 55% of daily allowance is also more than double what you would want from this sandwich. Cholesterol is okay at 85 mg or 28% of daily allowance. Sodium is a little high at 960 mg or 40% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 9 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 48 grams or 16%. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 29 grams or 58% of the daily allowance, but not as good as the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Deluxe Quarter Pounder are Wheat, Soy Lecithin, Milk and Egg.

The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder is a new creation. The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter pounder is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% beef with a slice of Cheddar cheese, thick-cut Applewood Smoked Bacon, a ripe tomato, leaf lettuce, and a spicy-cool Habanero Ranch Sauce on a toasted bakery style bun.

McDonald's Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder - Open

The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder does not taste as good as the other two Quarter Pounders. The main problem was the main ingredient, the spicy-cool Habanero Ranch Sauce. When it comes to spicy, McDonald’s continually misses the mark. Just as with the new Spicy Chicken Sandwich, McDonald’s over does it with the spicy. For these sandwiches, the spicy just overwhelms the sandwich and that is the only thing you can taste. I am not against all things spicy, as I did like the Jack in the Box Chipotle Chicken Club sandwich.

McDonald's Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts
McDonald’s Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder Nutrition Facts

As to nutrition, the Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder is about the same as the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder. At 610 calories, you are getting almost a third (30%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. This is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 30% daily allowance. With 30 grams of Total Fat or 48% of the total daily allowance, this sandwich is also over one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 13 grams or 65% of daily allowance is also more than double what you would want from this sandwich. Cholesterol is a little high at 105 mg or 35% of daily allowance. Sodium is high at 1180 mg or 49% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 10 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 46 grams or 15%. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 37 grams or 74% of the daily allowance. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder are Wheat, Soy Lecithin, Milk and Egg.

Quarter Pounder with Cheese

McDonald's Quarter Pounder

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% beef with two slices of American cheese, slivered onions, tangy pickles and mustard and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun.

The McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese is a McDonald’s staple. If you need to eat in the car while driving this is the go to burger. The cheese melts around the onions, pickles, and beef to keep everything inside the bun. The Quarter Pounder is big enough to be a meal yet small enough so you can eat it with one hand. It also tastes good. With two slices of American cheese, you defiantly have a cheesy burger. Even though the basic ingredients for the Quarter Pounder with Cheese can be found on just about any burger, the individual flavors of the onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup are all present and you can taste each one with each bite.

McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese Nutrition Facts
McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese Nutrition Facts

Nutrition for the Quarter Pounder with Cheese is a little better than the three new Quarter pounders, however not by a lot. At 520 calories, you are getting almost a third (26%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. This is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 26% daily allowance. With 26 grams of Total Fat or 40% of the total daily allowance, this sandwich is also over one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 12 grams or 60% of daily allowance is also more than double what you would want from this sandwich. Cholesterol is a little high at 95 mg or 32% of daily allowance. Sodium is high at 1100 mg or 46% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 10 grams. Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese is made with a two quarter pound (“before cooking”) patties of 100% beef with two slices of American cheese, slivered onions, tangy pickles and mustard and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun.

McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese Nutrition Facts
McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese Nutrition Facts

Nutrition for the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese is the following: At 750 calories, you are getting over a third (37.5%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. This is a little more than you might want in a single meal. Many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 37.5% of that daily allowance. With 43 grams of Total Fat or 66% of the total daily allowance, this sandwich is almost double what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 19 grams or 95% of daily allowance is more than 2 ½ times what you would want from a sandwich this size. Cholesterol is a high at 160 mg or 53% of daily allowance. Sodium is high at 1280 mg or 53% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 10 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 42 grams or 14%. This burger also provides you with almost all the Protein you need for the day at 48 grams or 98% of the daily allowance. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese are Wheat, Soy Lecithin and Milk.

Summary

Even though the Angus Burgers are gone from the McDonald’s menu, two of the new Quarter Pounders are an acceptable replacement. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder and the Deluxe Quarter pounder are great and are worth trying. However, I can not recommend the Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder. I could not taste anything except for the too spicy Habanero sauce.

Grilled Onion Cheddar BurgerNow that the price of the McDouble has been changed from $1.00 to $1.19 they needed to add something to take its place on the dollar menu. To try this burger I went through the drive thru at the McDonalds on 8876 North Cuyamaca Street in Santee, CA. As usual the service at this McDonald’s was fast and friendly. The burger was served fresh and hot. The Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger is exactly as the name states. It is a burger with grilled onions and cheddar cheese on a regular bun and that’s it, nothing more. Not even the creamy mustard sauce found on the Angus CBO. But, somehow it works.

Review of Burger King’s Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper

Burger King's Wisconsin White Cheddar WhopperFor this review I am going to compare the new Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper from Burger King with the Angus CBO from McDonald’s. I have already reviewed the Angus CBO and liked it a lot. Can Burger King beat the Angus CBO from McDonald’s?

Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper from Burger King

The new Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper sandwich is ¼ lb. grilled beef, topped with smoked bacon, Wisconsin white cheddar cheese, lettuce, red onions, tomatoes and pickles on a sesame seed bun.

Burger King's Wisconsin White Cheddar WhopperTo try the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper I went to the Burger King at 12427 Poway RoadPoway CA 92064. I decided to dine in for this visit. I went in around 5 PM on a weekday. As I went in, there was only one family sitting in the lobby and another couple just finished getting their order for take out. I placed my order and waited. It was taking awhile so I looked to see what was going on. I could see that my food was ready but no one was there to give me my order. Finally someone came up to the front just looking around. It looked like he was lost. After a few more minutes he noticed there was an order ready and placed my order in a bag very slowly. He then noticed on the receipt that this was for dine-in so he very slowly took the items out of the bag and placed them on a tray.  Once I got my order I went to a table and inspected the burger. The burger was cold and the meat looked undercooked. The cheese was missing, no pickles or tomatoes. It did have a few onions, the mayo, the bacon and a single piece of lettuce. The bun was stale and fell apart as I tried to eat this poorly prepared burger. Because this was so bad I decided that before I can give this a proper review I will need to try this burger again from a different Burger King.

Burger King's Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper.Burger King's Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper
A week later I made a second attempt at the Burger King at 6735 Mira Mesa Boulevard, Plaza Sorrento, San Diego, CA 92121. I went inside for this visit. There were only a few people in the restaurant when I went in. Service was slow and again it took awhile to get my food. I went back to my table and inspected my burger. The burger was served cold.  This time the burger was prepared with almost all the proper ingredients that are shown in the photo in the window and the video menu board behind the counter. However, the advertisements shows two sliced of cheese but my burger only had one slice of cheese. I asked the counter person if it should include one or two slices of cheese. She apologized and had the “cook” stuff a second slice of cheese into the cold burger. The Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper may have been a good burger if it was prepared hot so the cheese has a chance to melt into the burger at least a little, but this was just plain terrible. The cheese tastes like wax and that is all you can taste on this burger. I will not give this another try. See the photo from the in store poster for how this burger should have looked. I know that food never looks like the photo, but this is so far off the mark that I just had to share the photo.Burger King's Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper
For nutrition the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper is 950 calories, has 48 grams of protein, 62 grams of fat, 58 grams of carbohydrates, 62 grams of fat, 135 mg of cholesterol and 1660 mg of sodium.

Summary

The Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper from Burger King fails on all levels. The Wisconsin White Cheddar cheese will not melt on a cold or even a warm burger. Second, there is no taste other than the cheese on this burger, and most important the nutrition values for this sandwich are off the charts as very unhealthy. At least if I am going to eat unhealthy I want something that tastes great.

For a better choice I recommend the McDonald’s Angus CBO sandwich. It has much more flavor and is worth the indulgence. The Angus CBO is not the healthiest burger out there but is much better, health wise than the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper. The Angus CBO has 160 fewer calories than the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper and 21 grams less of fat and 15 mg less of cholesterol. It does fair a little better but very close for carbohydrates with 3 grams less and with sodium of 170 mg less.
