Review of Wendy’s Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwiches

Review of Wendy’s Flatbread Grilled Chicken SandwichesWendy’s introduces two new menu items. The Smoky Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich and the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Wendy’s is looking to bring the quality of higher end fast casual dinning to quick service. In this review, I will cover the quality, taste and nutrition of Wendy’s Flat Bread Grilled Chicken sandwiches.

For this review, I used the drive thru at the Wendy’s at 9655 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. I placed my order and then pulled up to the window to pay. When I reached the window, they took my money and gave me my drinks and most of my order but the Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwiches were not ready. After several long minutes, they finally handed me the rest of my order. Because Wendy’s is making these to order as you would in a fast casual restaurant it takes a little longer. In the long run this may be an issue as drive thru lines will take longer and food will not be ready at the same time causing the quality of the rest of the order to suffer. In addition, customers expect food to be prepared fast from a fast food restaurant. Without educating their customer, they may end up with some unhappy patrons. When I was waiting for my order there was no explanation as to what was going on. I was just told to wait for the rest of my order. This would have been the time to educate the customer and let me know that the Flat Bread Grilled Chicken sandwiches are made to order and take a little longer to make in order to insure the highest quality, or what ever marketing phrase they want to get the message across.

Wendy’s Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich

Review of Wendy’s Flatbread Grilled Chicken SandwichesFrom Wendy’s website, the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich brings a bold flavor to chicken sandwiches. With a toasted multi-grain flatbread, grilled 100% premium chicken breast, Applewood Smoked Bacon, a fresh-sliced tomato and spring mix topped off with ranch dressing.

Wendy’s states that they “worked with culinary experts to create the perfect five grain flatbread, carefully crafted by artisan bakers, including flax seeds, cracked wheat, rolled oats, millet and sesame seeds. The flatbread is warm and toasted on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside.” Therefore, I was optimistic for this sandwich. I expected great taste along with better nutrition. Unfortunately, I ended up disappointed with the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

My first impression of the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich was that it did look good, even if it was much smaller than it looked on the commercial. This should have tasted great but it just tasted like heath food. The bread was cold and dry. The graininess of the bread took over the entire sandwich. The Asiago Ranch dressing was not enough to overcome the graininess of the bread or to give this dry sandwich any flavor. There was not enough chicken to last for the entire sandwich. The final 1/3 was not worth finishing without the chicken.

Wendys Asiago Ranch Grilled Chicken Flatbread Nutrition Facts

All right, the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich may not be the greatest tasting sandwich, but at least I thought I was eating something healthy. But I could not have been more wrong. When I checked the nutrition and found that this is just as bad as an average burger. The number of calories look innocent enough at only 530. However, the total fat is very high at 30 grams; this is 46% of your daily allowance. This is not health food at all. Saturated fat is also high at 8 grams. Cholesterol is average at 90 mg. Carbohydrates at 35 grams are good and you do get 3 grams of fiber. Protein at 30 grams is very good. The known allergens for the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich are Wheat, Egg and Milk.

Wendy’s Smoky Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich

Review of Wendy’s Flatbread Grilled Chicken SandwichesFrom Wendy’s website, the Smokey Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich is a decadent mix of sweet & savory. With a toasted multi-grain flatbread, grilled 100% premium chicken breast, spring mix, fresh-sliced tomato and topped with smoky honey mustard sauce.

The Smokey Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich is also a good looking sandwich. However, this was also a disappointment for taste. The same problems as the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich exist for this sandwich. It was cold, dry, not enough chicken and the graininess of the bread takes over the sandwich.

The good news for the Smokey Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich is that it is healthier than the Asiago Ranch Flatbread. Calories are only 370.  Total fat is good at 15 grams and saturated fat is 2 grams. Cholesterol is good at 55 mg. Carbohydrates at 38 grams are good and you do get 3 grams of fiber. Summary

For taste, I can not recommend the Asiago Ranch Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich or the Smokey Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich. If you must try one and you want the healthier option, then select the Smokey Honey Mustard Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

Review of Taco Bell’s Cantina Bell Menu

taco bell's cantina bell menuWhen Taco Bell first came out with the Cantina Bell Menu by Master Chef Lorena Garcia in 2012 I thought I would try it. However, when I pulled up to the drive thru and looked at the menu I decided I did not want to try to figure out all the steps to create my order. When I go for fast food, I just want to find what I want and order it. I do not want to go through a three-step process. Well, now that Taco Bell has updated the steak recipe for the Cantina Menu I decided I had no choice but to figure out the steps to ordering and find out how to get a Cantina Steak Burrito.

For this review, I went to the Taco Bell at 9825 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. The lobby for this Taco Bell is very small but well maintained. As I entered, the young woman who was cleaning the tables in the dinning area greeted me. When I was ready to order, she came to the register and took my order. She was very pleasant and helpful with my order. I found this taco Bell to be very clean and the whole staff was friendly. I had some small issues with my order and they handled them with a smile, and an attitude of we want to make the customer happy. To me this is what good customer service is all about. It is not the fact that they get my order right to begin with. It is the fact that they take care of the problem and make it right, that is what impressed me about this visit.

How to Order from the Cantina Bell Menu

I am not sure if you will agree or not but at first I found the Cantina Menu to be confusing and off-putting. Because it showed ordering as steps, I thought there was more to it. I mean you break things down into steps to make something complicated easer to understand, right.
taco bell cantina bell menu
Well, this time I decided to actually read the Cantina Menu and finally figure it out. After reading the menu, I thought this is not that complicated. It is just spelling out the steps you would normally take when ordering any other item on the menu. First, you decide what you want from the menu, a bowl or the burrito. Next you decide what type of burrito or bowl that you want, Chicken, Veggie or Steak and finally you are decide if you want to make this a combo or not. Not that complicated.

If you decided to make it a combo, you will get chips and a drink with your order. But wait, you’re not done yet. Now that you made this a combo, there is an additional decision you will have to make. You must now decide what you are going to dip your chips in, are you going to choose Guacamole, Corn Salsa or Pico De Gallo? I know it seems like I am making a big deal about this extra step but when I placed my order I did not realize that I had this decision to make and the young lady at the register did not ask me about it either. When I got my order, I started comparing what I got with what was on the menu. I only got the Guacamole and I thought that I was to get all three items (Guacamole, Corn Salsa and Pico De Gallo). I did not realize it was a choice. I asked the young woman about it and she said “oh, I am sorry let me get you the rest of your order”. She did not realize it was an option either. Well, we got it sorted out and for this order, I was able to keep the Guacamole and she gave me the Pico De Gallo as well.

For me a more traditional menu layout that just listed each item separately would have been clearer. In fact, they could even have listed the Chips and salsa as a separate menu item. This would have allowed them to sell it separately as well as describe the choices of salsas with the chips.

The Taco Bell Cantina Steak Burrito

taco bell cantina bell menuFrom Taco Bell’s website the Cantina Steak Burrito is made with tender-braised thick cut steak marinated in Chef Lorena Garcia’s authentic Latin recipe, premium Latin rice, flavorful black beans, crisp romaine lettuce, guacamole made from real Hass avocados, pico de gallo prepared fresh daily, roasted corn and pepper salsa and a creamy cilantro dressing, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

taco bell cantina bell menuI found the steak in the Cantina Steak Burrito to be very tender and tasted like real steak. In the past, some of Taco Bells steak burritos had a mushy texture that made it taste like fake meat. The combination of the different ingredients was perfect. You can taste the real Hass avocados; the pico de gallo gave it a little spice without making it to spicy. The black beans and Latin rice added to the flavor. The lettuce and roasted corn and pepper salsa gives it a little crunch and the creamy cilantro dressing gives it a little more flavor along with keeping it juicy.

So is the Cantina Steak Burrito a healthy choice. Compared to other fast foods it would not be your worst choice. Yes, it is high is calories at 780 and high in fat at 28 grams and saturated fat at 7 grams. In addition, as is the case with most fast foods sodium is very high at 1,900 mg. However, when you figure that you are getting over a pound of food, these numbers do not seem as bad. On the plus side, there is no trans fat and cholesterol is good at only 50 mg. Total carbohydrates are only 98 grams. You get plenty of fiber at 13 grams and plenty of protein at 33 grams. Following are the known allergens for the Cantina Steak Burrito: Gluten, Milk, Soybean Oil, Egg, and Wheat.

Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Salsa

taco bell cantina bell menu
Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Guacamole

When you order a Cantina Burrito or Bowl as a meal, it comes with a medium drink, chips and your choice of Corn Salsa, Guacamole or Pico De Gallo.

First, let me start my saying that the chips are very good. The chips were light and crisp, on par with the chips you would get from nice sit down Mexican food restaurant. I tried the guacamole and it was very good. I could tell the guacamole was made fresh from real avocados as I could see and taste the chucks of real avocados. I also tried the Pico De Gallo salsa. It was also very good. It was chunky with a little bit of spice to give it some bite without being to spicy. I did not try the Corn Salsa separately but it was very good mixed into the burrito that I had.

Taco Bell Cantina Chips and Pico De Gallo

The nutrition facts given are for the chips with the salsa or guacamole together. Of course, the guacamole is the highest in calories, total fat and saturated fat. So if you are trying to save a little you can go with one of the other salsas. The good thing about these sides is that they are not just empty calories like other sides that you might have. You do get some fiber and protein that helps to make these a healthier choice for a side.

Reviews of Burger King’s Original Chicken, Italian Chicken and their New Philly Chicken Sandwiches

Burger King Chicken Sandwich ReviewsI will start by saying that in the past I have liked Burger King’s Italian Chicken sandwich and I also like a good Philly Cheesesteak. So I thought it was at least worth a try to taste Burger King’s new Philly Chicken Sandwich. I mean how bad could it be, right?

In this review I will start with a review of Burger King’s Italian Chicken sandwich and then review their new Philly Chicken sandwich. I will also include information on Burger King’s Original Chicken sandwich for comparison.

For this review I dined in at the Burger King at 9714 Mission Gorge Road in Santee, CA. As I wanted to review both the Italian Chicken and Philly Chicken sandwiches it was good that they had a buy one get one free promotion. So I ordered one of each. The cashier told me that I could take a seat and they would bring it out when my order was ready. After waiting a very long time I went up to the counter to find out what was taking so long. As I got there the manager was about to take my sandwich to fill an order in drive thru. The cashier let her know that the Italian was with extra sauce and she reluctantly gave it to him. I finally got my order.

So, why is it that in almost all fast food restaurants drive thru orders are placed as a higher priority over orders taken at the counter? This is not the first time I have been a victim of this, it happens all the time. I understand that they want to get the cars through as fast as possible but I placed an order as well and waiting a long time in the lobby is just as frustrating for a customer. Anyway, continuing to the review.

So after all this you would think that my food would have been served hot and fresh. But no, my fries and sandwiches where warm at best. The cheese on the Italian Chicken sandwich was not melted at all. The cheese on the Philly Chicken looked to be a little more melted but still was not hot. Let’s look at each sandwich in detail now.

The Burger King Italian Chicken Sandwich

What goes into the Burger King Italian Chicken Sandwich

Burger King's Chicken Sandwich ReviewsAccording to Burger King’s website the Italian Chicken sandwich starts with their original lightly-breaded chicken fillet topped with melted, thick, natural mozzarella cheese and then smothered with sweet tangy marinara sauce and served hot on a toasted sesame seed bun.

To start with my sandwich was not served to me as it was described on their website. The cheese was not “melted”, the sandwich was not “smothered” with sauce and it was not served “hot”. Even after asking for extra sauce there was very little sauce on this sandwich.

How does the Burger King Italian Chicken Sandwich Taste?

As I said at the beginning of this review, in the past I have always liked the Italian Chicken sandwich from Burger King and I look forward to its limited return to their menu whenever they bring it back. However, somehow the quality at Burger King has gone way down. With the sandwich being cold and the cheese not melted at all and only a hint of sauce, this was a very dry sandwich. Also, it seems that they have increased the amount of salt so that is all you really taste. I do not think I will look forward to having an Italian Chicken sandwich from Burger King the next time they bring it back. That is of course unless I forget my bad experience and think it will be made the way I remember it from years past.

Nutrition Facts for the Italian Chicken Sandwich

Burger King's Chicken Sandwich Reviews
Burger King’s Italian Chicken Sandwich Nutrition Facts

From a nutrition standpoint there are only two positive things I can say about Burger King’s Italian Chicken sandwich. It is very high in protein at 32 grams and it is the healthiest of the three sandwiches based on Burger King’s original chicken sandwich. That’s not saying much as it has 520 Calories and 21 grams of fat. Saturated fat is 7 grams and 3 grams of fiber. It has 65 mg of cholesterol. Carbohydrates come in at 54 grams. But the very worst for this sandwich is the sodium level at 1670 mg that’s 70% of your daily allowance in a single sandwich. If you are watching your sodium intake you will need to avoid this sandwich. The following are the known allergens for this sandwich: milk, wheat and soy. Also, if you are allergic to fish you may want to avoid this sandwich as it may have been cooked in the same oil as the fish filet.

The Burger King Philly Chicken Sandwich

Burger King's Chicken Sandwich ReviewsAccording to Burger King’s website the Philly Chicken sandwich starts with their original lightly-breaded chicken fillet topped traditional Philly-Style toppings – a colorful mix of bell peppers and seasoned grilled onions, served with American cheese and smothered with a creamy cheese sauce and served hot on a toasted sesame seed bun.

This sandwich did have lots of green and red bell peppers and grilled onions.

How does the Burger King Philly Chicken Sandwich Taste?

So I stated with the premise that I like a good Philly Cheesesteak and how bad could the Burger King Philly Chicken sandwich be, right? Well, pretty bad. The American cheese, cheese sauce, bell peppers and grilled onions pretty much taste like mush on a bed of salt. I finished about half this sandwich as I wanted to make sure I was giving it a fair review. But every bite was a chore and I would not recommend this sandwich to anyone.

The following are the known allergens for this sandwich: milk, wheat, and soy. Also, if you are allergic to fish you may want to avoid this sandwich as it may have been cooked in the same oil as the fish filet.

Summary

First, completely avoid Burger King’s Philly Chicken sandwich. It tastes terrible and is very unhealthy. If you can get the Italian Chicken sandwich made hot and fresh with the cheese melted and plenty of sauce then it is ok if you are ok with the high salty taste. If you want a healthy choice with one of these sandwiches be sure to avoid the Original Chicken sandwich with the mayo (its numbers are the worst overall of the three).
